I finally got to see the DVD of this movie last night, and I have to say that its absolutely beautiful. It certainly has the best quality animation of any of the cgi palaeo documentarys. My only real complaint is that the motion of the fish wasn't as realistic as the other animals. But then Ive never seen convincing cgi fish motion. The underwater flight of the "Dollys" was especially well done, probably some of the most convincing cgi animal motion Ive ever seen. I think this movie truly sets the bar for future palaeo docs, and Im sure that most will continue to fall short.

Thanks... I thought the animators did a great job... but there is always room for improvement....

The fish were a little stiff and jerky at times, but if you had seen the movie in a 3-D theater, I suspect you would have been tempted to reach up and try to touch them as they swam by....  Smiley

My biggest concern was that they would turn out something like an underwater "Bambi" movie... with creatures that were made of rubber... not flesh and bone. It took some time, and "do-overs", but the animators did listen to the paleontologists...

"State of the art" animation continues to improve... the next one will look even more realistic.

Regards,

My only complaint about the docu is that it's too short.
And I would have liked to see PhD's in that truck at the beginning instead of "kids."
Still a great afternoon DVD.

I certainly don't disagree that it was too short (besides the fact that they cut out my 1996 mosasaur dig!  Tongue )....just left me with a cameo scene....

There is a limit (about 40 minutes) to IMAX films, just based on the huge size of the film reels... Now that they are going digital, that shouldn't be a problem  in the future.

....the scenes with the female paleontologist were a tribute to Betsy Nicholls (1946-2004) ... so I'm more than happy to let it ride...

There were lots of other little issues, but it still turned out to be the best done to date... Hopefully we won't stop there!

I was also pleased to find out recently that we will be showing it at our Exploration Place here in Wichita, KS starting in September... so the monsters live on!!!

Really?
I didn't know there was a limitation - seems they could have had an intermission, tho', and gone ahead to Reel Two - "The Crunch of the Mosasaur, the Squeal of the Shark" [parents, take small children to the lobby] or some such.

I put it on again this morning.  It goes by so fast!

Mike, since you were involved in this film, any idea what species the tyrannosaur was supposed to be?
It was too early for T. Rex - apparently, they appeared in the last few million years pre-KT.
A Daspletosaurus?

Ouch!... you really know how to rub salt into a wound!  Tongue

Actually the dinosaur strutting on the beach (my pick for the worst part of the movie) is identified by National Geographic as Gorgosaurus... probably more like something along the lines of Albertosaurus-Dryptosaurus ... The beach was supposedly along the eastern edge of the Western Interior Sea, but theropods from the eastern part of North America during the Early Campanian are relatively poorly known... so you can call it anything you like!

Anyway, you're not supposed to remember that part!  Smiley

I thought it was pretty cool !

Still think we need some large theropods crossing a brackish river so a mosasaur or pliosaur could grab them - be quite a turn of the tables on one.  I'm sure if they did "island hop" as depicted in WWD a good percentage of them never made it to the next island . . .

Thanks, pliofan, I thought it was pretty cool, too.... and it lives on...

Although this may not be useful to anyone on the this list, I thought I should mention that SEA MONSTERS - A PREHISTORIC ADVENTURE will be showing at the Cyberdome Theater in Exploration Place, Wichita, Kansas... starting on September 24...

http://www.exploration.org/sea_monsters.php

While it will not be in the 3-D IMAX format, it has been reformatted for the 60 ft dome-shaped screen... 180 degrees of view....

I will be there to open the movie on September 24th and 26th... should be lots of fun...

COOL poster!
They should put a scene exactly like that in the sequel.

Mike and all,
Unless Europe is considered meaningless by NatGeo, I'm still complaining about the fact that
1) this wonderful movie is not released in zone-2 format and
2) it is impossible to get it outside of North-America.

Wish I could say 'woah', too Sad

Hard to believe they haven't released it in every format possible... but I would imagine that it is no longer a priority.... which is a shame..
