Database
This section of the site is built around a database which includes specimens, information on provenence, collections and references.
The core of this was collated by Tracy Ford, and I have built extensively on the basic information he provided. The database itself is a complex relational database made in Microsoft Access, and for technical as well as practical reasons I keep this as a off-line resource. The web pages are now created from a mySQL database which can be updated either on-line or from the master database, which means that the process of updating is far quicker than the old, off-line method.
The following sections of the site are run from the database:
- Collections: Collections which contain sauropterygian material organised on a geographical basis.
- References: References, including abstracts of many papers and pdf files of some.
- Taxonomy: A full list of sauropterygian genera and species, linked to individual pages for each species which list specimens referred to the taxon.
- Stratigraphy: Lists of specimens recorded by stratigraphical detail.
- Distribution: Lists of specimens ordered by where they were found.
The section called 'Old Texts' is a collection of papers and other documents made available on-line and does not form part of the Access database.
